I suppose Microsoft would say they "improved" the security on your computer whether you wanted it or not. That is probably why my W2000 computer cannot see files on my XP system but the XP system can see the W2000 files. Sheesh! I suppose they expect every user of XP/Vista to have a "system administrator" who knows more that to take a computer out of the box and plug it in.
I know it is baffling to "regular home users". My doctor calls me and pays me to come over about every 2-3 weeks to fix something that is in his way or does not work "out of the box".
