RE: Migrating to a new computer Allan Sansom 11.May.09 12:15 PM a Web browser Organizer All ReleasesWindows XP
I needed to go ahead so I can get up and running. Here, for the benefit of those after me, is an account of what I did.
I had to re-purchase ORG 6.1 to the tune of a little more than CDN$100. I had purchased it in '03, and for some reason had no "Customer ID number", though I still had the order number on an email telling me that it was my proof of entitlement from IBM.
After my re-purchase, I tried to download the software. My browser (OE 8.0) returned a javascript error message about not being able to run IBM's Download Director.
I called Lotus Support, who couldn't help me because according to their records my order was still "pending". This despite the fact that I DID receive an automated email from Lotus telling me that my purchase had gone through. Support assured me that I would receive an email from them with a link to download the software. To work around the browser error, they told me to choose fttp transfer rather than the download director.
Two days later (admittedly over a weekend in my part of the world), no email. I reopened the email I had rec'd, and rechecked my order status -- there was a new link on the web page to download the software.
The fttp transfer option is only available when you click on "Download Director/update".
Despite the computer installer's efforts to make me an administrator on my workstn, I could download but was locked out of installing ORG 6.1. Got our sys admin to help me work around that and successfully installed the software.
Opened ORG, then told it to open my old ORG data file that I had placed in a folder on my system. Again I was locked out because of security settings on my new computer. WIN XP told me I had read-only rights to the file (meaning I could not create/edit entries). Re-solved that with the sys admin. Copied my old ORG data file into the folder into the default location (can't remember the exact path).
Then in ORG, went into File>User Setup>Organizer Preferences. Told ORG to automatically open the file I copied each time it boots up. I seem to be where I need to be. Now I need to work through reestablishing the data connection between ORG 6.1 and my Treo 680 smartphone.
