sametime user lookup

Hi,
I have a question about sametime user lookup. How does sametime know that a user from who I received a emailmessage is a sametime user? Does sametime lookup the user in the DominoDirectory? If so, how can I tell sametime to look for that specific user in a secondary directory?
We have a mixed domain with exchange users (secondary directory) en Lotus Notes user. If a notes user receives an email messages from an exchange user i would like to display the Business Card info stored in de secondary (exchange server) directory.
