I've been trying to find a response to this question for about 3 years.. Right now I have stopped searching and I am searching for a replacement.
In January I was at Lotusphere 2012 and popped up this question to IBM guys.. They where able just to mumble something about testing it with different technologies, but.. they don't really have a plan for LWF.
So my guess it is it will follow into Document Manager footsteps.. meaning it will become End of Life and be replaced by some IBM product.
