Can you explain what "profile.config" is please?
Yeah documentation is a bit rubbish unfortunately.
If you are getting a portlet error it sounds like the application hasn't installed correctly. I have to admit though i don't know if registering it with the SSC would cause that. Probably best to start from scratch.
