I've had this issues and via a PMR here's what we needed to do to fix the issue:
Shut down Notes.
1. Delete the cache under :\notes\data\workspace\BrowserProfile\cache
2. shutdown the Notes client, backup and delete the autostatus.xml file in Notes data>\workspace\.metadata\.plugins\com.ibm.collaboration.realtime.alertmanager
restart Notes and login to Sametime. Should all be OK, or at least this fixed it for us running Notes 8.5.3 FP2 and and ST 8.5.2 IFR1
